Can you imagine fully charging your cell phone in just a few seconds? Researchers in Drexel University’s College of Engineering can, and they took a big step toward making it a reality with their recent work unveiling of a new battery electrode design in the journal Nature Energy.
The team, led by Yury Gogotsi, PhD,Distinguished University and Bach professor in Drexel’s College of Engineering, in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, created the new electrode designs from a highly conductive, two-dimensional material called MXene. Their design could make energy storage devices like batteries, viewed as the plodding tanker truck of energy storage technology, just as fast as the speedy supercapacitors that are used to provide energy in a pinch — often as a battery back-up or to provide quick bursts of energy for things like camera flashes.

In a report recently released by the Milken Institute, an independent economic think tank, Drexel University was ranked 46th out of 225 universities across the country based on its “technology transfer,” or ability to translate its academic innovators’ research into actual technologies, products and research-driven startups. The A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials is a leader at Drexel in it’s production of technology transfer and tech commercialization to leading industrial partners.

Prof. Yury Gogotsi represented the A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute at the World Science Festival, held in New York City. Prof. Gogotsi participated in the, MUCH ADO ABOUT NEARLY NOTHING: NANOTECH AND THE FUTURE OF ENERGY event, moderated with Walter Isaacson, president and CEO of the Aspen Institute. Many of our students and researchers presented at this year’s Drexel University International Research Showcase. Group members presented on our collaborative research conducted around the world, spanning South Korea, Saudi Arabia, France, China, South Africa, and the United Kingdom, to name a few.
Yury Gogotsi, PhD, whose materials science research as founder and director of the A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute has opened up new possibilities for the applications of nanomaterials, was installed May 1 as the inaugural Charles T. and Ruth M. Bach Professor at Drexel University.
