Super-Absorbent Material That Can Soak Up Oil Spills

In hopes of limiting the disastrous environmental effects of massive oil spills, Materials scientists from Drexel University and Deakin University, in Australia, have teamed up to manufacture and test a new material, called a boron nitride nanosheet, that can absorb up to 33 times its weight in oils and organic solvents—a trait that could make it an important technology for quickly mitigating these costly accidents.

DNI on National Public Radio

Yury Gogotsi, PhD, Distinguished University and Trustee Chair professor in the College of Engineering and head of the A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute, was interviewed in a Dec. 2 WHYY-Radio (91-FM) story about his research to create a super-absorbent material that can help to clean up oil spills.

Latest Publication in Nature Communications

Congratulations to DNI members, alumni, and partners at Deakin University for their latest paper published in Nature Communications, regarding research supported by the Australian Research Council.  This is the latest news on the materials produced from BN nano sheets that have amazing properties and can be used for a variety of applications, from cleaning oil spills to high-temperature composites.  The publication is an open access paper which is available to everyone for free downloading.

Dr. Michael Naguib Abdelmalak, currently at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and DNI alum, has been selected for this year’s annual “40 Under 40” in Drexel Magazine, the magazine of Drexel University’s 149,000 alumni. Congratulations to the MESC Class of 2015!

Congratulations to the MESC-10 Graduating Class, featuring Kanit Hantanasirisakul (advisor: Y. Gogotsi, MSE), Guan Huang (advisor: M. Tang, CBE), and Mustafa Goktas (advisors: J. Baxter and A. Fafarman (CBE).  Each student completed an intensive six-month research project at Drexel as part of this prestigious two-year masters program, and defend their MS thesis in Amiens, France this week. Drexel University is part of a consortium of seven universities and two research centers worldwide that offers a joint masters program in Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion (MESC).
